Why Are Some Sprinkler Zones Not Working? A DFW Homeowner Guide
Learn what failed sprinkler zones can mean, what information to gather, and how HandyNauts approaches irrigation troubleshooting in DFW.

When one sprinkler zone stops working, the cause may be different from a system where several zones fail together. Before replacing parts, note which zones work, which do not, and whether the failure began after yard work. Those details help your sprinkler specialist narrow down the problem.
One zone versus several zones
A single failed zone can involve its control wire, valve, solenoid, controller connection, or water supply to that section. Several zones failing together can point to a shared issue, including a damaged common wire. These are possible causes, not a diagnosis based on the number of failed zones alone.
Recent digging is an important clue
Tell us if someone recently installed a fence, buried an internet cable, built a patio, or changed the landscaping. Irrigation pipes and control wires may pass through those areas. A cut wire is not always visible from above, and it may have been damaged in more than one place.
A real HandyNauts troubleshooting example
On a ten-zone system, only three zones were working. Our team found a damaged common wire and additional wiring cuts near an orange internet cable. After tracing and repairing the damaged wiring, all ten zones operated. On another six-zone job, the common wire had been cut at two locations approximately ten feet apart, with additional zone-wire damage near a trenched cable. That visit took about four and a half hours to trace and repair. The point is that hidden wiring damage can take time to locate; replacing a valve without testing may miss the cause.
Information you can gather safely
Write down the affected zone numbers and any controller messages. Take a clear photo of the controller model and a picture of the yard area where work occurred. Note whether you see a persistent wet spot, hear water running, or have unusually weak spray. Use normal controller controls only if the area is safe and there is no active leak. If water is pooling or a pipe is visibly broken, stop the watering cycle and contact us. Avoid opening electrical equipment or digging to find wires yourself.
How much does troubleshooting cost?
HandyNauts sprinkler diagnostics start at $125 and include the first hour. Locating buried damage, tracing wiring, and making multiple repairs can require additional work. We explain the findings, repair scope, and pricing before proceeding with additional repairs. Valve locating, when needed, is priced at $175 for the first valve and $100 for each additional valve.
